Done is better than perfect — the Lord recently taught me that. God began urging me to write and record worship music years ago, but fear and distraction kept me from taking the leap. Worried that I didn’t have the right songs or the right team, I stayed comfortably in the planning stage. I talked a lot, but did very little.
Gradually, the Lord revealed my procrastination for what it was: disobedience. I was just like Moses, after God told him to confront Pharaoh and lead His people out of Egypt. “‘I am nobody,’ Moses said. “‘How can I go to the king and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'” He doubts God, saying, “‘Master, please, I don’t talk well. I’ve never been good with words…I stutter and stammer’” (Exodus 3, 4). Angered by Moses’ lack of faith, God reassigns the task to Moses’ brother.
The same doubts that led to Moses’ lapse in faith were felt by me. Fortunately, the Lord reassured me: “I chose you and I know why I chose you,” He told me. “The results may not be perfect in your eyes, but have faith in me.” Encouraged, I surrendered. I decided to create a small EP record, knowing that it might not be as perfect or profound as I wanted it to be. Regardless, I was going to obey.
As soon as I started, God somehow made everything fall into place. He opened all the right doors and strung together an incredible creative team. From there, we recorded a handful of songs I’d written a while back, plus a few new ones. Everything just flowed…that was God’s providence. A year and a half later, we released my EP. All it took was a small act of obedience on my part — God did the rest.
By waiting for the “right time” or until everything is “perfect,” we place our own understanding above God’s. His ways are not our ways! Don’t wait around and miss out on His invitation to do something awesome for His Kingdom. If God has placed a project or task on your heart, obey Him. Despite whatever flaws and insecurities you may have — just do it.
“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’ So He said, ‘I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.'”
